Privacy Policy
Last updated: 15 October 2026
This policy explains what information Hauntbound: The Hollow Book ("the game") and this website use, why, and the choices you have. The game is made by DevHub ("we", "us").
Who to contact
For any question about your data, including requests to see or delete it, email support@hauntboundgame.com. We answer within 30 days.
What stays on your computer
The game saves the following on your own computer, not on our servers:
- The player name you choose, your outfit, and your settings (such as volume, language and the chat filter).
- Your progress: matches played, wins, pages of The Hollow Book found, and which achievements you have earned.
- A small diagnostic log file, used to fix problems. It is never sent anywhere automatically. You may choose to send it to us when asking for help.
On Windows, this data is in the %APPDATA%\Hauntbound folder. Deleting that folder deletes it.
Playing online
Online rooms, room codes and the connections between players run on Epic Online Services, provided by Epic Games, Inc. They work the same whether you bought the game on Steam or on the Epic Games Store, so players from both stores can play together.
Signing in
- Steam version: the game asks Steam for a sign-in ticket and gives it to Epic Online Services, which confirms your Steam account and creates a player ID for this game. You don't need an Epic account, and the game doesn't receive your Steam password.
- Epic Games Store version: you sign in with your Epic account through the Epic Games launcher. Epic asks for your permission before the game receives your Epic account ID and display name, and access to your online status and the list of your Epic friends who also play. We use these only for the game's online features, such as showing you which friends are playing. You can withdraw this permission at any time in your Epic account settings.
In a room with other players
- The other players in your room receive what's needed to play together: your player name and outfit, which store you play on (shown as a "Steam" or "Epic" tag), your character's movements and actions, and the chat messages you send.
- This information goes directly from your computer to theirs, or through Epic's relay servers when a direct connection isn't possible. With a direct connection, the other players' computers can see your IP address, as with most online games.
- We don't record or store matches or chat messages. You can mute other players, and the chat filter is on unless you turn it off.
Achievements
When you earn an achievement, the game tells Steam (Steam version) or Epic (Epic Games Store version) so it appears on your profile there.
Purchases
You buy the game from Steam or the Epic Games Store. They handle payment, and we never receive your payment details.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising or analytics tools in the game.
- We don't sell or rent your personal information, and we don't use it to build profiles of you.
- We don't keep our own database of players.
This website
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or trackers, and doesn't load anything from other companies. Like any website, our web host may keep short-term technical logs (such as IP address and browser type) to keep the site running and secure. Links to Discord, Steam or Epic take you to their sites, where their own privacy policies apply.
Other companies involved
- Epic Games, Inc. runs Epic Online Services and the Epic Games Store: Epic Games Privacy Policy.
- Valve Corporation runs Steam: Steam Privacy Policy.
These companies are based in the United States, so information they process may be transferred outside your country, under the safeguards described in their policies.
A free version of the game is also available on the Tesana platform. That version uses Tesana's services (for example for saves and its shop) and is also covered by Tesana's privacy policy.
Why we use this information
If you live in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or a similar place: we use your information to provide the game and the online features you choose to use (performance of a contract); with your consent for the Epic account permissions; and for our legitimate interest in keeping online play working and safe from abuse.
How long it's kept
Data on your computer stays until you delete it. The player ID and room information held by Epic Online Services are kept according to Epic's policy. Room membership ends when you leave a room.
Your choices and rights
- You can play on your own against bots without going online at all.
- You can change your player name at any time in the game's Wardrobe.
- Depending on where you live, you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal information, to object to or restrict how it's used, and to receive a copy of it. Email us and we will help, including asking Epic to delete the online player data linked to you.
- You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
The game is suitable for a general audience but is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. Steam and Epic accounts have their own age rules and parental controls. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the game uses information, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
